Blank Stares and Better Tomorrows
W. Somerset Maugham once said "tradition is a guide, not a jailer." He's right, even if he was a damn Frenchman. We should not be shackled to the past; our previous mistakes and achievements have nothing to do with the future. In fact, living in yesterday is the fastest way to find yourself lost tomorrow.
But that doesn't mean we can't pay a visit to the old days every now and then.
Admit it. You had fun growing up. Disagree? Ask around. See who still remembers, let alone talks to, their old friends. Chances are you'll get a lot of blank stares and "oh, what was his name..." answers.
There's a reason why the BDS, born as a distraction during Trig class, has lasted for almost 20 years. It's not because we bind ourselves to history. It's because through it we find a better tomorrow.
